Ewu, Edo State — September 2024
The people of Ewu have issued a strong statement condemning efforts to infringe on the civil rights of their respected community leader, Pastor Henry Amenkhienan, and others in the lead-up to the Edo Governorship election. The statement describes these efforts as an organized attempt to silence Pastor Amenkhienan and prevent him from participating in the democratic process.
The statement reads: “We wish to make it abundantly clear that any attempt to suppress, intimidate, or restrict participation in this election will be met with the full weight of lawful resistance.” The Ewu people emphasized that such actions are not only an attack on Pastor Amenkhienan but an assault on the collective rights of the entire community. They reiterated their unity and resolve to defend the democratic process and safeguard their civic rights.
The Ewu people also called upon relevant authorities to uphold the integrity of the upcoming election by ensuring it remains free, fair, and peaceful. They demanded that every citizen be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights without any fear of intimidation or suppression. This message comes amid concerns over rising political tensions in Edo State as the governorship election approaches.
