The Oneghe Sele Foundation, a prominent NGO focused on community development in Edo State, has called for the immediate reversal of the recent renaming of Edo State University, Uzairue, to “Edo University, Iyahmo.” Speaking to newsmen today in Benin during an exclusive interview with SME Media, the Foundation’s Director of Public Relations, Mr. Wisdom Idemudia, described the renaming as a decision that “undermines inclusivity and the integrity of public institutions in Edo State.”
Mr. Idemudia highlighted the Foundation’s concern over the removal of “State” from the university’s name, which he said could create the impression that the institution no longer belongs to the people of Edo but rather serves private or individual interests. “This is a public university built with taxpayers’ money. Its name must reflect its ownership and purpose,” he stated.
He also expressed alarm over the narrowing of the university’s name to “Iyahmo,” a small quarter within the larger Uzairue community, calling it divisive. “Uzairue represents a broader identity that unites the community. Reducing the name to Iyahmo excludes other quarters and risks creating unnecessary friction within the Uzairue community.”
According to the Foundation, if the government’s intention is to honor the university’s founder, Adams Oshiomhole, a more inclusive name like “Adams Oshiomhole University, Uzairue” would have been a better alternative. “Such a name would celebrate his legacy while respecting the identity of the entire Uzairue community and preserving public trust,” Mr. Idemudia said.
The Foundation also raised concerns about the decision-making process, which it described as “hasty and politically motivated.” Mr. Idemudia emphasized the need for proper consultation with stakeholders before making such significant changes to public institutions. “Governance must prioritize unity and collective good over political sentiments,” he added.
Oneghe Sele Foundation has been at the forefront of community development in Edo State, championing causes like the creation of Kugbe State to address longstanding concerns about equitable resource allocation and governance. The Foundation views the restoration of the university’s original name as part of its broader mission to ensure inclusivity and fairness in Edo State.
The NGO urged the Edo State Government to reverse the renaming of the university and restore its original name, “Edo State University, Uzairue,” or, if necessary, rename it in a way that honors individuals while respecting communal identity. This, according to the Foundation, would reaffirm the institution’s status as a public university for all Edo people and promote harmony across the state.
