In a landmark decision, the Kano State House of Assembly, Thursday, repealed the Emirates Council Law 2019, effectively dissolving the five emirates created by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2019. This move marks a significant shift in the state’s religious leadership structure, returning to the Single Emirate System.
Kano State House of Assembly has abolished the Emirates Council Law 2019 that dethroned Alhaji Sanusi as Emir, replacing him with Alhaji Bayero.
The five emirates dissolved are; Bichi, Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Kano – and all offices established under the repealed law have also been set aside by the new law.
The repeal bill revives the Single Emirate System in Kano, with the Emir of Kano being the sole traditional/religious ruler in the state.
The law now authorizes the governor to call upon traditional kingmakers to choose a new emir, as there are no longer active emirs in any of the five emirates.
The lawmakers have emphasized the need to restore the unity and dignity of Kano, which was allegedly diminished by the creation of additional emirates.
This development raises questions about the future of the deposed emirs and the potential return of Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
