In the old days, when men gathered in the village square to settle disputes, everyone knew their rights and duties. Today, our village square is the workplace, and we, the workers, must also know our rights.
This year, 2024, a new law was passed, raising the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. This law is like a yam barn filled with food, ensuring that no one works all day only to go home hungry. But just as not every villager is entitled to a share of every yam, not every worker will receive this wage. Let me explain.
If you work for a large company, government, or even a school, mosque, church or shrine with 25 or more workers, the law requires that you be paid at least ₦70,000. No less. However, if you work for a smaller organization with fewer than 25 workers, the law does not apply. Likewise, if you are a part-time, commission-based, or domestic worker, you are not covered by this law. Still, it’s important to understand the terms of your employment and negotiate where possible.
The Minimum Wage law applies to any workplace with 25 or more employees. So, even if it’s a church, school, or other large establishment has many workers, they are required to pay at least ₦70,000. As a worker, you have the right to demand this wage. You are like the farmer who plants yams and deserves his fair share of the harvest. Do not be afraid to speak up if the barn is full, yet you remain hungry.
Workers must remember: no employer—whether government, private, or religious—should pay you less than what the law permits. If you are entitled to ₦70,000 and receive less, you have every right to demand what is rightfully yours.
In our land, despite the current situation where Nigerians genuinely doubt the credibility of their institutions, justice does not sleep, and in this matter of wages, neither should you. Know your rights, stand firm, and claim what belongs to you. Go to court, if anyone abused your right.
